Two Nights of Stand-Up
+ The Debaters Live

July 4 & 5, 2025

Ten years ago, we reached out to Steve Patterson and asked how we might go about putting together a comedy festival in a historic theatre, in a little town in Newfoundland he’d never even heard of.

And look where we are now…

Steve, his wife Nancy, and their daughters Scarlett and Norah (both of whom took the stage last year) have become part of the Woody Point family. This summer, we’re celebrating a full decade of laughter with an all-star lineup—including some of your favourites from festivals past.

Friday, July 4, 2025
Woody Point Heritage Theatre
Doors: 7:30 PM | Show: 8:00 PM

Featuring DeAnne Smith and Derek Edwards, with host Steve Patterson and music by the Louis McDonald Trio.
DeAnne was a knockout the first time they hit the Heritage Theatre stage. You’ve seen them on Netflix and The Late Late Show—don’t be fooled by their elfin appearance; their comedy is razor sharp.
And if you’re a fan of Canadian stand-up, you already know: Derek Edwards is one of the best. Rick Mercer called him “the funniest man in Canada”—and who are we to argue? We’re thrilled to welcome Derek to Woody Point for the very first time, closing out Friday’s show in style.

Saturday, July 5, 2025
Woody Point Heritage Theatre

Featuring Erica Sigurdson and Derek Seguin, with host Steve Patterson and music by the Louis McDonald Trio.
Saturday brings back two crowd favourites—Erica Sigurdson and Derek Seguin—a powerhouse duo of hilarity and heart, ready to roast our beloved audience once again.

And… we’ve got one more 10-year anniversary surprise: The Debaters Live at the Woody Point Heritage Theatre!

Be it resolved that The Debaters Live is heading to the Woody Point Heritage Theatre on July 5, 2025 for a hilarious night of comics going toe to toe in a battle of laughs and logic—and where you, the audience, pick the winner!

In celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Woody Point Comedy Festival, host Steve Patterson is bringing back to the stage Erica Sigurdson and Derek Seguin to perform stand-up and a hilarious debate for the second half of the show, in a format familiar to hundreds of thousands of loyal Canadian fans of the radio show.

The Debaters and The Debaters Live are created by Richard Side. This special is a live production and is not produced by CBC.

DeREK EDWARDs

Derek Edward’s award-winning humor has made him one of the most in-demand comics in Canada.

Identifying himself with the ordinary working guy, his comedic gift is making the ordinary extraordinary. Selling out concert halls across Canada, Derek Edwards can also be found many evenings entertaining at corporate events across North America.

From Vegas to St. John’s, this Just For Laughs veteran is universally considered to be among the comic elite. Certainly his peers think so, as evidence by the fact that he’s a four-time nominee, and winner of Best Standup Comic—Canadian Comedy Awards, as well as a multiple Gemini nominee for Best Performance in a Comedy.

Derek’s numerous TV and radio credits include The Red Green Show, The Debaters, Just For Laughs, Laugh Out Loud and CBC’s Comics. Derek is currently touring theatres with his new show, “Oxy Moron.

eRICA Sigurdson

Vancouver-based Erica Sigurdson has been delighting audiences across Canada and beyond for close to two decades. Having been described as a ‘sugar-coated razor blade’ she is equal parts charming and sardonic with her take on the world around her. She has been featured over to 50 times on the hit show The Debaters on CBC Radio, performed at every major comedy festival in Canada as well as performed in Singapore, The Philippines, Thailand, Afghanistan and Iceland. She is also an advocate for Type 1 diabetes awareness, having lived with Type 1 since the age of 10.

DeAnne SMITH

DeAnne Smith, The Loose Cannon of Comedy, has rocketed around the world, from Just for Laughs to the Iceland Comedy Festival. They've performed on CBC, ABC, and BBC (and once lived in B.C.). The Philadelphia Weekly called their monthly comedy show, DeAnarchy, “one of the best comedy shows in the country,” which is very validating and mysterious, since the show takes place in New York City. The UK Telegraph says they’re “Smart. Very funny. Effortless charm lets them get away with murder.” What a quote! DeAnne has never actually murdered anyone, but rising fascism and the callous disregard of the billionaire class for life on earth is for sure making them think about it. Oh, and they were recently featured in Hannah Gadsby’s Gender Agenda on Netflix. They’re really great at comedy, is the point. (Less great at writing bios. Do you think “Loose Cannon of Comedy” will stick?)

DeREK SEGUIN

Derek Seguin has performed at the prestigious invitation-only Just For Laughs festival an impressive 11 times as well as appearing numerous times at every other major festival in the country, making several television appearances along the way.

The Montreal Gazette enthused that: “Derek Seguin earned a standing ovation for his set during the ninth Just for Laughs gala … had me gasping for air, I was laughing so hard at the detailing of his second date with his Newfoundland girlfriend. ... What made it great, however, was not the boldness of his material but that he described it all in such childlike wonder. Brilliant.”

He has also appeared on CBC Radio’s, “The Debaters” more than fifty times and is one of the show’s fan favourites. Seguin’s comedy albums, “PanDerek - 1st Wave” and “Life of Leisure” were both nominated for best comedy album at the Juno Awards and won the Sirius XM’s Canada’s Top Comic.

Whether he’s ragging on politics or describing life with his children, he brings us into his perspective without preaching any selfish point of view. His undeniable charm makes him simply fun to watch and listen to and is in large part why he is one of Canada’s most “in demand” comedians.

Steve Patterson

Steve Patterson is an award-winning stand-up comedian with over 25 years of international performance experience. As host of the long-running hit radio show and podcast The Debaters and theatre show The Debaters Live, Patterson’s brand of comedy is best described as honest and erudite combining well-crafted writing with unparalleled off-the-cuff wit. Twice named Canada’s Best Male Stand-Up at the Canadian Comedy Awards, Patterson is known for masterfully keeping the audience engaged with heartfelt stories, concisely constructed letters, and original songs. In short, Patterson packs much more than punchlines into his show.

A household name in Canadian comedy through his long-time radio hosting and numerous televised gala appearances, Steve served as anchor for the “If It Makes You Happy” Gala at the Winnipeg Comedy Festival in 2022 which debuted on CBC and across various media platforms in 2023. He has also taken his award-winning humour to the literary world with The Book of Letters I Didn’t Know Where to Send and most recently,  Dad Up! are availablewherever books and audiobooks are sold.

About Comedy at Woody Point

Comedy at Woody Point has been delighting audiences in Western Newfoundland with some of the top Canadian comedic talent.  It all started when the Writers at Woody Point founding Artistic Director, Stephen Brunt, contacted comedian Steve Patterson and his producer-wife, Nancy, with the idea to bring comedy to The Woody Point Heritage Theatre. Much like the underlying values of the renowned literary festival in Woody Point, the goal became to celebrate Newfoundland’s rich comedy culture, showcase comedic talent from across Canada to the audience, and encourage cultural activities at the theatre and in the community. Since the first summer in 2016, on the second weekend in July, the sound of laughter can be heard echoing from the Woody Point Heritage Theatre across Bonne Bay. The festival has presented headlining comedians such as Trent McClellan, Ali Hassan, Elvira Kurt, Erica Sigurdson, Derek Seguin, Nikki Payne, Ivan Decker, DeAnne Smith, Cathy Jones, Matt Wright, Gavin Crawford, Shaun Majumder, Ron James and more.
